Large Marsh Rose-pink
Sabatia dodecandra
A perennial native of the eastern coastal plain, large marsh rose-pink carries clear pink blooms along river banks and ditches where few ornamentals would tolerate the wet.
Sabatia dodecandra is a perennial sabatia of the wetland margins, native to the eastern and southeastern United States and most at home along river banks, roadside ditches, and disturbed areas where moisture is reliable. Its clear pink flowers are among the larger in the genus, held on slender branching stems that reach between 6 inches and about 2.5 feet depending on conditions. Blooms appear through summer and carry the open, five-petaled structure typical of the genus.
This is a plant for the naturalized or rain garden rather than the conventional border, suited to sites that drain poorly or stay damp through the growing season. It asks for little beyond adequate moisture and reasonable sun, and its willingness to grow in challenging wet conditions makes it a genuinely useful native for difficult low spots. Large marsh rose-pink is less commonly encountered in cultivation than some of its sabatia relatives, which gives it a particular appeal for gardeners interested in the rarer textures of the coastal plain flora.
