Fragrant Sarcococca

Dense, deer-proof, and reliably fragrant in late winter, Fragrant Sweet Box earns its place at every shaded foundation and woodland edge in zones 7 through 9.

Fragrant Sweet Box is a measured plant, building slowly to 4 feet tall and equally wide, spreading from suckers at a pace that fills a space over years rather than seasons. The late-winter white flowers are small but carry a genuine sweetness, and their timing when almost nothing else is in bloom makes the fragrance feel disproportionately valuable. Glossy evergreen foliage holds year-round, and the plant attracts songbirds with its berries after flowering. The species name ruscifolia references the resemblance of its leaves to Ruscus, butcher's broom.

For best performance in zones 7 through 9, site this shrub in part shade to full shade with acidic, organically rich, moist but well-drained soil. A consistent mulch layer helps maintain the soil moisture and pH conditions it prefers. Leaves will scorch and lose luster in full sun, particularly in the warmer end of its range. Prune in spring after flowering to shape and control height. It is worth placing this plant near doors, walkways, or windows where the late-winter fragrance can be appreciated on cold days. Scale insects can be an occasional problem and are worth checking for on the stems.
