Kuma Bamboo Grass
Sasa veitchii
A Japanese bamboo that winters in two tones, its dark green blades edged with pale cream as the cold arrives.
Sasa veitchii brings a quiet drama to the winter garden that few plants can match. Through spring and summer, the broad, dark green leaves read as clean and architectural; then, as temperatures drop in late fall, the margins bleach to a warm cream while the centers hold their deep color. The effect is natural and unhurried, as though the plant is slowly exhaling into the cold season.
Grow it as a groundcover by cutting hard to the ground each spring after the new flush emerges, or let it stand taller by cutting before new growth begins. Either way, be prepared for it to travel: the rhizomes spread assertively, and a physical root barrier is worth installing at planting time if containment matters. Zones 6 through 9.
