Carpet Sedum
Sedum lineare 'Variegatum'
The cream-edged needles of this eastern Asian cultivar bring quiet brightness to dry slopes and rocky edges without demanding anything extra.
Variegatum is a cultivar of Sedum lineare, sharing all the tenacity of the parent species while adding a narrow cream margin to each fleshy, linear leaf. The result is a low mat, rarely topping half a foot, that reads as brighter and more intricate than its plain-green counterpart without straying into the garish. Zones 6 through 9 suit it well, and it settles equally comfortably into hanging baskets, rock gardens, and the tight margins between paving and wall.
Like all sedums in this family, Variegatum is bluntly honest about its preferences: sharp drainage above all else, full sun for dense, upright growth, and restraint with the watering can. Too much shade and the stems stretch toward the light and lose their compact habit. Propagation at any time is straightforward, by division, stem cutting, or simply leaving a fallen leaf in contact with soil. Slugs and snails occasionally show interest, but in a well-sited planting they rarely cause meaningful damage.
