Senecio
A genus of more than a thousand species, Senecio spans weedy annuals and architectural succulents alike, unified by silvery foliage and cheerful yellow daisy flowers.
Senecio is one of the largest genera in the plant kingdom, with over 1,000 recognized species that range from invasive agricultural weeds to prized garden perennials and sculptural succulents. The family is the daisy family, Asteraceae, and the yellow, composite flower heads appear reliably across the genus wherever plants are given enough light. What draws gardeners to ornamental Senecios, though, is foliage: many species carry dense silvery hairs on their leaves that catch light beautifully and hold their own in containers, borders, and hanging baskets from spring through frost.
In the garden, place sun-loving ornamental varieties in full sun in cooler climates, with some afternoon shade where summers are hot and dry. Well-drained potting mix and restrained watering are the keys to avoiding root rot. Most ornamental Senecios tolerate drought well once established, though they resent sitting in wet soil. Indoors, bright indirect light is sufficient through winter months. A note of caution: the sap can irritate skin, so gloves are worth wearing when handling, and all parts of the plant are toxic if ingested by pets or livestock. Keep it out of reach of animals.
