Curtis Aster
Symphyotrichum retroflexum
A Southern Appalachian endemic found in the mountain woodlands of NC, GA, TN, and SC, Rigid Whitetop Aster closes the bloom season with lavender-blue rays around a warm yellow center.
Rigid Whitetop Aster occupies a narrow geographic territory: the mountain counties of North Carolina, Georgia, Tennessee, and South Carolina, where it grows in well-drained woodland soils and along roadsides at elevation. The late summer to fall bloom carries lavender rays arranged in a stiff, formal pattern around a yellow disc, an understated combination that reads well against the greens of a woodland understory.
Its specific habitat and limited range give it a collector's appeal for gardeners in the Southern Appalachians interested in locally native species. It performs best in partial shade to part sun with good drainage, in the kind of open woodland or roadside-edge conditions that approximate its natural setting. Bees visit reliably through the bloom period. Because hardiness data for this species is not fully documented, gardeners outside its native mountain range should approach it as a trial plant.
