Cleyera

A refined evergreen shrub with tiered branches and bronze-to-green foliage, often mistaken for cleyera but entirely its own character.

Ternstroemia gymnanthera earns its place in the garden through quiet distinction rather than spectacle. Its tiered branch structure creates a naturally architectural silhouette, and the foliage does something few shrubs manage: the juvenile leaves emerge in burnished bronze and red, gradually deepening to a glossy dark green as they mature, then returning to bronze tones in fall. Those leaves crowd attractively at the branch tips, giving the plant a whorled, layered appearance year-round. Creamy white flowers in spring are subtle, and the oval fruits that ripen to red in fall are an underplayed seasonal bonus.

Plant this in part shade for best results. Full sun invites winter burn on those handsome leaves, particularly along the coast, where its salt tolerance otherwise makes it a fine choice. It thrives in moist, acidic, well-drained soils and will sulk with yellowing leaves in alkaline conditions. At 8 to 10 feet tall and 5 to 6 feet wide, it makes a reliable screen or specimen, and its slow pace often means pruning is simply unnecessary. A pinch of new growth occasionally keeps the habit tidy and dense.
