Hetz Midget Arborvitae

Thuja occidentalis 'Hetz's Midget'

Hetz Midget Arborvitae

Three feet of perfect patience, this globe-shaped arborvitae takes decades to settle into its form and asks very little in return.

Hetz Midget arborvitae earns its place through quiet permanence. The naturally rounded, single-trunked form matures to just 3 or 4 feet tall and slightly wider, built from dense, flat, layered sprays of scale-like foliage that require no clipping to stay tidy. Hardy from zones 3 through 7, it tolerates clay soils, urban grime, and alkaline conditions that would stress less adaptable plants.

Full sun brings out the most compact growth; deep shade thins the foliage noticeably, so a position with morning sun and afternoon dapple works well in warmer gardens. The main hazard is deer, which browse arborvitae enthusiastically in winter when other food is scarce. A wire cage through the first few winters protects a young specimen until it establishes. From there, Hetz Midget settles into long service as a foundation anchor, a low hedge component, or a reliable round counterpoint to upright forms in a mixed border.
