Asian Star Jasmine
Trachelospermum asiaticum
A fast-spreading evergreen ground cover with sweetly fragrant cream flowers, equally capable of blanketing a slope or scrambling up a fence with twining enthusiasm.
Trachelospermum asiaticum has earned its widespread use in warm-climate gardens through a straightforward combination of virtues: fast establishment, attractive glossy foliage year-round, reliable fragrant spring bloom, and genuine tolerance of the conditions that challenge other ground covers. As a low spreader it stays between one and two feet tall while covering 10 to 12 feet in width over time. Given a fence, trellis, or arbor, the twining stems will climb readily, adding flexibility to how the plant can be deployed. Cream-colored flowers in spring carry a sweet scent that rewards planting near walkways or patios.
Full sun to partial shade suits it well, and average to fertile well-drained soil keeps it vigorous. A hard prune in early spring before new growth emerges keeps the plant tidy and encourages fresh foliage. Propagation from semi-hardwood stem cuttings or layering is straightforward. The combination of moderate salt tolerance, drought tolerance once established, and deer resistance makes it a practical choice for coastal gardens and challenging slopes alike. It pairs well behind taller companions like rose mallow or alongside the upright foliage of New Zealand flax, where the low spreading habit and contrasting leaf textures create a layered planting with minimal maintenance.
