Hairy Toad Lily

The Japanese toad lily that launched a thousand cultivars, and still the benchmark for late-season shade.

Tricyrtis hirta hails from the rocky cliffsides and shaded stream banks of Honshu, Shikoku, and Kyushu, and it carries that rugged elegance into the garden. The flowers are white to soft lavender, generously freckled with purple speckling, and they bloom from late summer into fall when most shade perennials have long since finished. The plant spreads into clumps 18 to 23 inches wide via slow-creeping rhizomes, making it an excellent ground-level accent without the aggressive tendencies of more vigorous spreaders.

Over the past two decades, breeders in Japan and the United States have developed a remarkable range of cultivars from this species, variegated forms, deeper purples, compact habits, but the straight species retains a quiet dignity all its own. Plant it in partial to full shade with moisture-retentive, slightly acidic soil rich in organic matter. Keep the soil from drying out completely and the foliage will stay lush through the season. Hardy through zone 4, it is one of the most cold-tolerant toad lilies available and a reliable presence year after year.
