Globeflower
Trollius x cultorum
Cool-season globes of gold that thrive where summers stay kind and moisture never runs short.
Trollius x cultorum is a garden hybrid built for the northern end of the temperate world, where damp meadows and moist rock gardens give it the conditions it needs to perform with confidence. The flowers are genuinely striking: rounded, globe-shaped blooms with overlapping sepals that give them the look of an oversized, sophisticated buttercup. Yellow and orange selections are both available, and all of them bring a warmth to spring gardens that few other cool-season perennials can match. In North Carolina, mountain gardens are the appropriate home for this hybrid.
As summer heat builds, the foliage tends to decline, and cutting it back keeps the garden looking tidy while the plant conserves energy underground. Dividing clumps in late summer or early fall refreshes vigor and spreads the colony. Butterflies are drawn to the open flowers, and deer tend to leave the plant alone. Powdery mildew can appear in humid conditions, so good air circulation and siting away from stagnant spots will serve this plant well.
