Canadian Hemlock

Tsuga canadensis Emerald Fountain® 'Monler'

Foliage
Canadian Hemlock

A columnar evergreen of understated elegance, the Emerald Fountain hemlock draws the eye upward without demanding width from the garden.

Emerald Fountain Canadian hemlock was selected for its narrow, upright form, growing six to ten feet tall while holding to just two or three feet wide. That columnar silhouette makes it genuinely useful in smaller gardens where a full-sized eastern hemlock would eventually overwhelm the space. The flat needles carry two white bands on their undersides, a detail that becomes visible when the breeze moves the foliage and adds quiet year-round interest. The genus name Tsuga comes from a Japanese word meaning mother and tree, and there is something fitting about that in a plant that provides such steady shelter for songbirds.

Like all Canadian hemlocks, Emerald Fountain requires moist, well-drained soil and suffers in the heat and humidity of the Southeast. Partial to full shade is preferred, with protection from afternoon sun in southern locations essential to prevent foliage scorch. Winter mulching improves survival in colder zones. The tree is noted as resistant to both deer and black walnut, which broadens its planting possibilities in difficult sites. Fire risk is rated high, so placement away from structures is recommended.
