Blueberry 'Climax'
Vaccinium corymbosum 'Climax'
An early-season performer bred for heat, 'Climax' delivers large, firm, dark blue berries ahead of most cultivars and keeps on giving in warmer gardens.
'Climax' earns its reputation as a reliable opener for the blueberry harvest season. Where other cultivars are still sizing up, this heat-tolerant selection is already ripening dark blue, firm-textured berries with a sweetness that holds up raw or in baked goods. The combination of early harvest and high yield in a single plant makes it a natural anchor for a sequenced blueberry planting, pairing well with mid- and late-season varieties to extend fruiting from early summer well into September. It is suited to zones 6 through 9 and performs best where full sun can be guaranteed for at least six hours daily.
The cultural requirements follow the genus standard: acidic soil is essential, and a location near established pine trees often provides naturally suitable pH conditions. Regular watering matters most in full sun sites, where the soil can dry out faster than the shallow fibrous roots can tolerate. When planting multiples, allow six to eight feet between plants so there is room to move around each shrub at harvest without damaging stems. Propagate from stem cuttings of the current year's growth in late summer. Net the shrubs as fruit develops, because birds find 'Climax' just as appealing as any other ripe blueberry.
