Leatherleaf Viburnum
Viburnum rhytidophyllum
A bold-textured evergreen from China whose deeply wrinkled, dark-green leaves hold their presence year-round, even when the temperature drops.
Leatherleaf Viburnum announces itself through texture before it announces itself through flower. The large, opposite, lanceolate leaves are deeply wrinkled and tomentose on both surfaces, giving them a rough, almost prehistoric quality that reads beautifully against smoother-leaved companions in a mixed border. Flower buds form in late summer of the prior year and remain ornamental through winter before opening into broad yellow-white cymes 4-8 inches across in late spring. Red berries follow, persisting into winter and catching the eye long after the blooms have faded.
Native to China and hardy in zones 5-8, this shrub reaches 10-15 feet tall and appreciates well-drained, average to moist acidic soils. In colder parts of its range, siting it where it gets some protection from winter wind reduces the likelihood of dieback. Its deer resistance makes it a reliable evergreen screening option in areas where browsing is heavy. For best fruiting, plant at least two specimens within pollination range of each other.
