Carlcephalum Viburnum

A hybrid of unusual vigor that produces large snowball flower clusters with the penetrating fragrance of Viburnum carlesii on a plant that grows 6 to 10 feet in every direction.

Fragrant Snowball is the result of crossing two viburnums with very different qualities: Viburnum carlesii, celebrated for its penetrating spiced-rose perfume, and V. macrocephalum, the Chinese Snowball, known for its enormous spherical flower clusters. The offspring inherits substantially from both parents. The blooms appear in spring as globe-shaped clusters, dense and white, and the fragrance is strong enough to announce itself from several feet away. Growing as a multi-stemmed shrub with an open, rounded form, it fills a 6-to-10-foot footprint in all directions and benefits from space to grow without crowding.

This is a plant for the larger garden or a position where its generous size can develop without constant intervention. In well-drained, moist soil it establishes readily and develops good drought tolerance over time. It performs across zones 6 through 8. Reddish fall foliage color adds a second season of interest before the leaves drop. For maximum fruit production, plant two or more together or near other viburnums that bloom at the same time. The combination of scale, fragrance, and adaptability makes Fragrant Snowball a strong candidate for shrub borders, informal hedges, and foundation plantings where a substantial, undemanding presence is the goal.
