Pragense Viburnum
Viburnum x pragense
Prague Viburnum brings year-round structure to the garden as an evergreen shrub reaching 8 to 12 feet, earning its keep with fragrant flat-topped white flower clusters in spring and bold persistent foliage.
A cross between V. rhytidophyllum and V. utile, Prague Viburnum is one of the more versatile large evergreen shrubs available for zones 5 through 8. Its oval to rounded form fills out to 8 to 12 feet in both height and spread, making it well suited for foundation plantings, dense hedging, or a prominent specimen where its year-round green presence anchors the composition. The fragrant white flowers arrive in spring as wide, flat-topped cymes, and berries follow in autumn to extend the seasonal interest.
In its coldest zones the foliage may burn or the plant may die to the ground in severe winters, but established specimens typically regrow from the roots come spring. Average, moist, well-drained soil in full sun to partial shade covers most planting scenarios. Aphids, scale, bacterial leaf spot, and crown gall are possible problems but rarely devastating. The deer resistance makes it a practical choice in areas where browsing pressure runs high.
