Lady's Delight
Viola x wittrockiana
The cool-season garden standard that delivers months of color when most annuals have given up entirely.
Viola x wittrockiana is a hybrid bred from European species, refined over generations into the wide-faced, overlapping-petaled bedding plant now found in garden centers every autumn and spring. Growing 6 to 9 inches tall and up to 12 inches wide, pansies form tidy mounds that tolerate light frost and genuinely prefer cool weather. Plant them in fall for winter and early spring color, or in late winter for a spring display that runs until the summer heat forces them out. Humus-rich, consistently moist, well-drained soil and full sun to part shade give the longest performance.
Deadheading spent flowers extends the bloom period noticeably. Plan for removal once temperatures climb, and replace with warm-season annuals. The flowers are edible, though plants from nurseries may carry systemic pesticide treatments, so source accordingly if that matters. Fungal leaf diseases, pansy leaf spot, and slugs are the usual problems to watch for. Use pansies in containers, hanging baskets, formal borders, and winter gardens where their face-like markings and wide color range earn their place reliably, season after season.
