Barren Strawberry

Low, glossy, and reliably yellow each spring: the European barren strawberry delivers groundcover without the drama.

Waldsteinia ternata is a perennial groundcover from Europe and Asia in the rose family, producing a dense mat of glossy trifoliate leaves that stays evergreen in mild winters. The yellow flowers appear in late spring to early summer, and while the plant resembles a strawberry closely enough to fool a quick glance, its fruit is strictly ornamental. It spreads by stolons and runners at a measured pace, never aggressively colonizing beyond its intended territory, which makes it genuinely useful along pathways, at the front of borders, and cascading over rock walls. Hardy from zones 4 through 9.

This plant thrives in a wide range of soils from full sun to dappled shade, though in the South some afternoon shelter is appreciated during the hottest months. Once established, it is notably drought tolerant and shows reliable deer resistance. The combination of easy-going soil requirements, manageable spread, and clean evergreen foliage has made it a dependable choice for English and shade garden settings. It layers beautifully with spring-blooming bulbs, providing a living green backdrop that persists after the bulb foliage fades.
