Atamasco Lily

A genus of over 70 species tuned to rain — when a storm passes and the sun returns, these small bulbs push flowers up from bare ground almost overnight.

Zephyranthes takes its name from Zephyros, the Greek god of the west wind, and the genus carries that transient quality through its whole lifecycle. Distributed across southern North America down through Central and South America, these compact bulbs have evolved a striking adaptation: bloom is often triggered by rain, sometimes within a day or two of a significant downpour. The effect in a garden can feel almost theatrical, as if the soil has decided to celebrate.

With over 70 species plus countless hybrids and cultivars, flower color ranges from white and soft yellow to various shades of pink, with grass-like foliage on most and somewhat broader leaves on a few. Bloom timing varies by species, spanning spring through fall, with many performing best in summer and autumn. They prefer well-drained soil in sun to part shade and are reliably hardy in zones 7 through 10, though some selections push into cooler territory. Excellent candidates for rock gardens, border edges, walkways, and containers that can be moved indoors where winters turn severe.
