Compact coral barberry
Berberis x stenophylla 'Corallina Compacta'
At barely eighteen inches, Corallina Compacta is one of the smallest barberries in cultivation — a tidy mound of narrow leaves and yellow-orange spring flowers that fits where larger shrubs cannot, right down to a bonsai pot or a rock garden crevice.
Dwarf Coral Hedge Barberry is a cultivar selected for extreme compactness within the Berberis x stenophylla group, reaching only about one and a half feet tall and wide at maturity. The narrow leaves and spine-tipped branches give it a fine-textured, almost delicate appearance that reads as quite different from the bolder mahonias it is related to, making it useful in situations where structural variety matters. In spring, yellow-orange flowers appear in a showy display proportional to its modest scale, followed by dark purple fruits in autumn.
This is a plant that rewards thoughtful placement. It works well at the front of a border, in containers, in rock gardens, and in small urban spaces where a taller shrub would overwhelm. Its use in bonsai reflects its naturally refined habit. Once established it tolerates drought and handles most soils except wet heavy clay, performing best in full sun but accepting light shade without complaint. Deer resistance makes it sensible for garden edges. Powdery mildew may appear, but serious pest and disease problems are rare, and maintenance demands are minimal for a plant that contributes considerable year-round structure.
