Winter's Hope Camellia
Camellia 'Winter's Hope'
Winter's Hope starts small and thinks long — a slow-growing white camellia of particular refinement that over time becomes a substantial shrub or small tree, its semi-double blooms arriving in autumn on a plant bred for cold-hardiness without sacrificing flower quality.
Winter's Hope is the patient member of the Ackerman Winter Group, a slow grower that will eventually reach 8 to 10 feet, larger than most of its siblings, developing into a proper small tree if left to its own inclinations over the years. The hybrid crosses Camellia oleifera 'Lu Shan Snow' with the hybrid 'Frost Princess', the first parent contributing cold-hardiness, the second the semi-double white flower form that gives this camellia its distinctive quiet elegance.
In zones 6 to 9 it needs the same conditions as all camellias: consistently moist, well-drained, acidic soil with high organic matter, shelter from cold winter winds, and a position in partial shade where early and late direct sun reaches it but the midday and afternoon heat does not. Pruning after flowering keeps the form in check and improves air circulation, which helps with disease prevention. Winter's Hope is well suited to containers or woodland gardens, and its eventual size makes it worth considering as a long-term structural planting in borders where other plants will grow around it. The white semi-double blooms in autumn are good for cutting and bring something genuinely unexpected to a vase at a time of year when flower choices narrow considerably.
