Winter's Star Camellia

Large violet-pink single flowers appear in early fall on a compact, dense shrub — the Winter Series camellia with the boldest bloom and a constitution that holds steady into Zone 6.

Winter's Star sits in an interesting middle ground among the Ackerman hybrids: substantial in flower but restrained in stature, reaching 4 to 6 feet with a dense, upright habit that makes it useful across many garden situations. Its parentage draws from Camellia oleifera 'Lu Shan Snow' for cold hardiness and C. hiemalis 'Showa-no-sakae' for flower form, and the result is a single-form bloom of unusual size and a striking violet-pink hue that reads differently from the softer shell pinks of its Winter Series siblings.

The blooms open in early fall, among the first of the camellia season, which gives the garden a flare of color before the broader autumn show begins. At this scale it fits comfortably in small gardens, works well in large containers, and holds its own in woodland settings or at the edge of a mixed shrub border. The same care requirements apply as to all camellias in this group: acidic, organically enriched soil, consistent moisture, protection from drying winter winds, and pruning only in the brief window after flowering ends.
