Creeping Sedge

'Bunny Blue' offers the glaucous softness of the species in a tighter, more manageable form — six to twelve inches of cool blue-green that works as readily between paving stones as it does at the shaded border edge.

A selected cultivar of the North American native Carex laxiculmis, 'Bunny Blue' inherits all the toughness of the species and packages it in a more compact, evergreen form well suited to smaller gardens and close-up planting. The foliage is a soft, powdery blue-green — distinctive enough to anchor a composition without ever overpowering it — and it holds its color through the year, providing calm continuity in the shade garden when deciduous plants come and go around it.

It thrives in partial to deep shade with moist, humus-rich soil, but tolerates dry shade once established and is cold-hardy to zone 4, making it one of the more versatile blue-foliaged ground covers for the northern garden. 'Bunny Blue' is particularly effective planted along walkways and between stepping stones, where its low, spreading habit softens hard edges and the glaucous foliage shows best at close range. It serves as a genuine alternative to hostas in shaded spots, providing similar visual calm with finer texture. Deer leave it alone. Plant it in drifts for maximum effect, or use a single clump as a front-of-border accent in a contained space.
