Broad Leaf Sedge

Carex platyphylla

Foliage
Broad Leaf Sedge

Broadleaf sedge carries a subtle glaucous bloom on its unusually wide leaves that shifts them toward blue in certain lights — a native woodland groundcover whose cool, silvery character makes it a compelling and deer-resistant alternative to hostas in deep shade.

Carex platyphylla takes its name from the Greek for broad leaf, and the name is genuinely earned. Where most sedges present narrow, grass-like blades, this northeastern North American native produces leaves that are wide enough and sufficiently glaucous to catch the eye in the filtered light of woodland shade. That slight blue-grey cast — more pronounced in dry or bright conditions — gives the plant a quietly luminous quality, a pale shimmer in the understory that earns its common name of silver sedge. In North Carolina it is considered uncommon, occurring sporadically in the western and central parts of the state; across the broader northeast it is a more familiar presence in moist, humus-rich woodland soils.

Broadleaf sedge thrives in full or partial shade and asks for moist, organic-rich soil — conditions that mirror its native forest floor habitat. It will not tolerate sun or foot traffic, but in the right situation it is as easy and undemanding as any plant in the garden. As a deer-resistant alternative to hostas it has real merit, offering comparable foliage interest without the slug damage that hostas collect in wet seasons. Plant it en masse as a groundcover beneath deciduous trees, use it as a specimen accent in a shaded rock garden, or site it beside a stream where its cool blue-green foliage can be reflected in the water. Hardy from zone 4 to 8, it is a plant of genuine character that rewards a well-chosen position.
