Sielbold Maple

Siebold Maple is a slow-growing Japanese maple that takes decades to reach its full character — the patient gardener is rewarded with reliable autumn colour and a refined, rounded form that integrates easily into a range of garden styles.

Acer sieboldianum is a small to medium, slow-growing deciduous tree in the maple family (Sapindaceae) native to Asia, named for the German physician and naturalist Philipp Franz von Siebold who made extensive collections in Japan in the early 19th century. Growing 15 to 30 feet in zones 5 to 8 over many decades, it develops a broadly rounded crown with palmate leaves of seven to nine lobes that turn yellow, orange, and red in autumn with dependable colour.

Moths visit the small yellow spring flowers. It performs well in dappled shade with moist, well-drained soil, and its slow growth makes it manageable for smaller gardens over a long period. Less commonly planted than the palmatum cultivars, Siebold Maple offers the autumn quality associated with the best Japanese maples in a species form with a directness and natural character that some cultivars lack.
