Buttonbush is the rare native shrub that thrives with its roots in standing water, producing perfect spheres of cream-white flowers through midsummer that attract an extraordinary breadth of wildlife — from bumblebees to wood ducks.

Cephalanthus occidentalis occupies a specific ecological niche and occupies it superbly. Native across eastern and southern North America, it grows naturally in swamps, along streambanks, around pond edges, and in standing water up to three feet deep — conditions that eliminate most ornamental shrubs from consideration. In those demanding wet-site situations, buttonbush earns its place through sheer ecological productivity, drawing in bees, butterflies, hummingbirds, waterfowl, and songbirds through a combination of fragrant summer flowers and persistent reddish-brown fruit that carries nutrition into winter. It was named NC Wildflower of the Year in 2023, a recognition long overdue for a plant this generously useful.

The flowers are the spectacle: small white tubular blooms packed into round pincushion clusters, one to one and a half inches across, appearing from June through September with a fragrance that carries on warm summer air. The plant grows as a multi-stemmed shrub with an informal, rounded crown, typically reaching 5 to 8 feet in cultivation though capable of tree-like proportions in ideal conditions. It adapts to various soil types provided they stay reliably moist, and tolerates heat and soil compaction with good temper. For rain gardens, bioswales, pondside plantings, or any low-lying spot with chronic drainage problems, buttonbush is among the most ecologically valuable choices available to gardeners in its native range.
