Afghanistan Redbud

Afghan redbud survives where almost no other flowering tree would consider the attempt — in dry, stony semi-desert on the edge of its native range, now endangered in the wild. Its pink flowers are edible, and they linger longer than those of any other redbud.

Cercis griffithii comes from country that does not ask whether you are comfortable. In Afghanistan and the surrounding region it grows on dry, stony slopes in semi-desert conditions, in the kind of gritty, fast-draining soil where most ornamental trees would decline the offer. It is a deciduous upright tree in the legume family, reaching 15 to 20 feet, and it carries the standard redbud calling card of pink flowers on bare stems in spring. What sets it apart is persistence: the blooms of this species hold longer than those of other redbuds, extending the display through a period when garden time tends to move quickly. The flowers are edible — sour and pleasant — a characteristic shared by other redbuds but rarely mentioned in garden contexts.

In the wild, this species is considered endangered, its native habitat steadily reduced by orchard and vineyard establishment, urban expansion, grazing pressure, and illegal harvesting. That context gives the plant a significance beyond ornament. In cultivation it is extremely rare, suitable mainly for specialist dry-garden collections in zones 7 through 9 where its tolerance of arid, sandy or gritty conditions can be properly matched. It is more drought-tolerant than most of its relatives, which is the most practically useful thing about it for garden use, though it is deer-susceptible and demands well-drained soil as a baseline condition. For those few gardens where conditions align, Afghan redbud offers not only flowers but connection to a plant whose existence in the wild is no longer guaranteed.
