Blue Moss Cypress

Chamaecyparis pisifera 'Boulevard'

Foliage
Blue Moss Cypress

The 'Boulevard' false-cypress carries a cool, blue-green that holds through winter when most conifers look merely dark. Its soft, pliable needles give the plant a texture that invites touch in a way that most evergreens do not.

Introduced in 1934 by Boulevard Nurseries in Rhode Island, this cultivar originated as a sport of 'Squarrosa' and has since become one of the more recognized blue-toned false-cypresses in cultivation. The foliage is genuinely soft, linear, and blue-green in a way that photographs can understate. It builds itself into a dense pyramid, reaching five to six feet in its first decade and potentially maturing at twelve feet, though it responds well to pruning if a more compact form is wanted. The canopy tends to open and become more leggy with significant age, which is worth anticipating in long-term placement decisions.

The reddish, peeling bark beneath the foliage adds an additional layer of interest that becomes visible as the plant matures, particularly in winter when the garden is less full. 'Boulevard' does best in moist, well-drained, acidic loamy soil and benefits from some shelter from persistent wind. Full sun to part shade suits it across zones 4 through 8. Younger plants transition well from container growing, and the blue-green needles contrast handsomely against darker-leaved neighbors or against the warm tones of brick and stone.
