Golden Threadbranch False-cypress

Chamaecyparis pisifera 'Filifera Aurea'

Foliage
Golden Threadbranch False-cypress

The Golden Threadleaf false-cypress drapes its golden, thread-like foliage like a cascade that has been held still. In winter, when surrounding color departs, it becomes one of the most reliable warm presences in the garden.

A sport of C. pisifera 'Filifera,' this cultivar inherited its parent's dramatically thread-like, pendulous shoots and then added its own contribution: a clean, golden-yellow foliage color that holds through the year. The plant builds itself into a broad cone, growing very slowly to six or seven feet over two decades, though under favorable conditions it can eventually reach twenty feet. The thread-like branches weep and cascade in a way that is genuinely distinctive among conifers, and the peeling reddish bark beneath adds texture at the trunk. Native to Japan, it carries that country's talent for combining the austere and the ornamental in one form.

Full sun gives 'Filifera Aurea' its best color, though some afternoon shade helps prevent sun-scald in hot climates. It adapts to a range of moist, well-drained soils and holds its golden tone through winter with particular faithfulness. This quality makes it valuable in winter gardens, where it offers warmth against bare soil and the gray tones of dormant plants. Use it as a specimen in the lawn, as a hedge or screen, or for color contrast against darker evergreen companions. Zones 4 through 7 are its sweet spot.
